MTV Movies' Honorable Mentions Of 2011

When creating your report on the ten best films of year, inevitably a great film or two just won't easily fit in one last roster. This is when the honorable mention will come in handy. Probably the film will be a little dumb, somewhat odd or something like that like this only decided to be off, but for reasons unknown this didn't increase the risk for cut, you want it nonetheless. We asked for the MTV Movies staff to discuss their honorable mention for your film year that was 2011. "Source Code" Duncan Jones' second feature shipped nearly everything I really could request in the popcorn sci-fi flick: time travel, parallel galaxies and great plot twists which make you asking pals afterwards, "Wait, what managed to get happen mean when...?" Fans of Mike Gyllenhaal's cult fav "Donnie Darko"—which really truly is certainly a terrible movie—would be provided to throw some love toward JG's "Code," because it spins a greatly superior sci-fi yarn. Let's all just pretend we needed an origin-code trip from the and handled to alter the film's Hollywood ending it is therefore not too blandly, cheesily, plot-defyingly nonsensical. -Eric Ditzian "The Guard" Something dark and funny runs inside the McDonagh family. Martin McDonagh developed a status for themselves writing twisted, amusing Irish plays and burst into film while using nearly perfect "In Bruges," starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in 2008. This year, his brother John Michael McDonagh hit the identical notes along with his feature film debut "The Guard," which stars Gleeson one of the most misbehaved cops you'll ever see. Gleeson acquired a Golden Globe nomination for your role and therefore. "The Guard" combines dark humor, heart and enough action to keep you entertained throughout, nevertheless it ultimately lacks the depth that made "In Bruges" a modern day classic. Kevin Sullivan "Insidious" I am likely to be honest. I'd no fascination with seeing "Insidious." Once I saw advertisements with this, I immediately overlooked it. But upon seeing images in the snarling, hypnotic creature behind Patrick Wilson, I used to be beyond intrigued. "Insidious" does an admirable job creating a desolate and creepy mood, but sadly, it staggers with a problematic and crazy finish. Nonetheless, the images are excellent, as well as the cast enhances the campiness. For those who have one hour half an hour to get rid of on Netflix, have a look. -Joel Hanek "Immortals" The moment "Immortals" was introduced, I used to be ready to buy a ticket for opening day. A completely new spin round the Theseus versus the Leaders myth? A cast of very attractive stars? All beneath the direction in the exuberant, visionary ground-breaker Tarsem Singh? Discuss winning combinations. It is not like I imagined getting my ideas completely blown once i did finally start to see the film. I merely wanted a sizable, beautiful spectacle, and because respect "Immortals" shipped in spades. Lots of bloody battles, lots of beautiful physiques, a great deal fun. Plus, we have got our start searching at "Guy of Steel" Henry Cavill's action hero prowess, that's very promising indeed. -Kara Warner "Another Earth" In the event you could meet another version of yourself, a sum you say? A sum you've always wondered? Director Mike Cahill asks these questions plus much more within the feature film debut that employs a compelling sci-fi concept—the discovery of one other Earth filled with alternate versions of ourselves, people who made different choices than us—as a means to dive into man's instinct, the mistakes that individuals make, the measures we visit find forgiveness as well as the ways we punish ourselves. Featuring touching performances from leads Brit Marling and William Mapother, "Another Earth" is not just the most popular sci-fi film of year, but among the best movies I saw this season. Seek it—you won't be sorry. -Josh Wigler "Jane Eyre" Everybody recognizes that 2011 was Michael Fassbender's year: "Shame," "A Dangerous Method," "X-Males: Top Quality,In . lots of high-profile stuff. But the most popular of his films this year hit theaters in March, which i question if others recalls it. Fassbender carried out Rochester inside a good adaptation of "Jane Eyre." His co-stars incorporated Jamie Bell, Judi Dench, Sally Hawkins and Mia Wasikowska as Jane a great cast inside the best literary adaptations I've observed previously couple of years. The film is dark, intense and romantic. In my opinion Charlotte now now Brontë may have approved. -Tami Katzoff What were your honorable mentions of 2011? She has a large part within the movie but we desired to build the thrill of seeing him," Shankman described about why we simply see brief glimpses of Cruise as rocker Stacee Jaxx. "I'd imagine we'll get little glimpses of him singing, however in the [first] teaser we did not wish to accomplish that. It's exciting, it is the large mystery." 'Twilight' retains top spot at Friday B.O.

'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1'The domestic B.O. treaded water yesterday as no new wide releases meant another Friday victory for Summit's "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1." Down 67%, pic grossed $5.5 million bringing its cume to $235.9 million. In second, Disney's "The Muppets" made $2.7 million for a cume of $48 million. Pic is expected to add another $13 million to Disney coffers through Sunday, though yesterday's perf suggests it may only land in the high single digits instead. "Breaking Dawn -- Part 1" should gross around $15 million this weekend. The larger-than-usual drop and the lack of major releases this frame can be attributed to the calendar. The weekend following Thanksgiving is traditionally one of the softest Stateside seshes of the year, with what few moviegoers there are planning to play catch up.The newcomer that has probably garnered the most buzz this frame is Fox Searchlight's "Shame." The NC-17 drama starring Michael Fassbender as a sex addict opened on 10 screens nationwide yesterday to a respectable average of $11,048 per screen, landing in 16th place at the domestic B.O.With the rest of yesterday's top films locked in a horse race behind "Muppets," Paramount's "Hugo" leapt from last week's fifth to this week's third with $2 million, perhaps in light of its recent National Board of Review best film win. Par's pic was followed by a pair of Sony releases, "Arthur Christmas" and "Jack and Jill," which grossed $1.7 million and $1.6 million, respectively. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
